Lessons from the past week...

I always say, you learn something every day, no matter how small -- and last week was no exception. In the past seven days I have learned that:

  • Little kids in the hospital probably won't care if the pattern in the green fabric doesn't run in the same direction throughout the quilt. This bugged me for about a day, then I accepted it. I just won't use directional prints next time.

  • Archie likes waffles.
  • I need to clean out my cupboards more often, as illustrated by this container of frosting found in the way-up-and-way-back. Note that the announcement on the label doesn't mention anything about that newfangled technology, the DVD. Extra points for you if you can name that year!

  • And as long as I'm finding old food in the cupboard, let's note that dried beans do, indeed, go bad. If you don't like your black beans a little crunchy (despite soaking for 48 hours and cooking for 6), I'd suggest not letting the bag reside in-house for longer than a couple years. If the notion of chewing your soup appeals to you, then come on over to my house, I've got a whole pot of it!
  • Always remember to remove the bay leaf BEFORE using the immersion blender! Talk about adding insult to injury...
  • No matter how weird the texture of the soup is, sometimes you just have to buck up and eat it. And hope you don't cut your tongue on the bay leaf shards.
  • I lose my momentum at the pinning stage of quilt making, which explains all those tops in the duffle bag in the closet. Too tedious, and too much crawling around on the floor. It does make for a nice picture, though...
And that's about it. What did you learn last week?

Funny, I learned that very same thing about black beans (and navy beans) last week! I also learned that sometimes you just have to stop planning and start cutting. Finally, I learned (or was once again reminded) that the more someone pushes me to do something, the more I dig in my heels and resist.

Lovely pinned quilt - the colors are fantastic and the pins do add an interesting quality. Too bad we can't use them that way.

By the way, I also have a grain-loving orange and white cat (Rugen). He waits patiently for me to finish my (dry) frosted mini wheats. I try not to let him have much, since I already went through the diabetic cat thing.

Every donation quilt I make requires starting over on the "a kid won't care" lesson. But I have learned that sometimes those mistakes make for a more interesting quilt (but sometimes they just look like mistakes!).

I love the fabrics in your pinned quilt.

LOL - your post sure made me giggle!..I've been guilty of using up older ingredients too.. Just this weekend I used up some old cocoa in brownies...so far everyone is none the wiser :o)

I have a grown daughter who regularly comes over to "shop" in my basement to stretch her grocery dollar- no worries about mine, apparently. She is constantly telling me that this or that is "expired". I guess I really should pay attention.

I love that green fabric. I've used it a few times myself!

What did I learn last week? it's a personal lesson, but I started approaching my recovery as training and I'm working on accepting that it will be months to years to a good recovery.

sounds like um, interesting soup. eek, will remember the lesson about the bay leaf. I love that green fabric going both directions. it might bother you, but it just makes the quilt livelier to me.

I think the fact that the green fabric goes in two different directions looks great - a great design choice.
I got an email that my package is on its way! Yikes! I'm not sure I am ready.
